A game for learning road safety, but without leaving home

Children were the first to be confined, even before Spain declared the state of alarm. And the partial loosening of the quarantine has not been without polemic. An online game created by the Royal Automobile Club of Catalonia (RACC) gives them the chance to be in the street ‘virtually’ as long as they like, while they learn key concepts of road safety.

It’s called MOU-TE-BÉ! Play & Learn and it’s available in Spanish and Catalan.  Aimed at kids from 6 to 12 years old, the game is set in a city where the children can move around to meet 12 tests of different levels.  From the most basic, like which elements are necessary to ride a bike or skate, to the most advanced, like how to move around the city –on foot, by bike, in a car or with public transport– and how to react in case of an accident.

“The videogame has three objectives: to develop students’ autonomy and responsibility, help them to become aware of the importance of road safety, and favor habits and attitudes that will prevent traffic accidents,”

“In spite of the fact that now we can’t leave the house unless it is strictly necessary, the game allows children to learn through play. It’s a way of using this period to acquire some essential knowledge that they can put to use when things get back to normal,” says the RACC.

The website also provides professors with a teaching guide to direct the activities that they offer the students.

“The videogame has three objectives: to develop students’ autonomy and responsibility, help them to become aware of the importance of road safety, and favor habits and attitudes that will prevent traffic accidents,” according to the developers of the game, which is available for both computers and tablets.
